This site was created to provide you the most valuable credit and debt information on the internet, and to get you excited about improving your finances, we decided to give away a $100 American Express Gift Card! Plus, don’t miss out on more giveaways throughout the year!

The deadline for entries is 8:00pm EST August 11th (08/11/2008)
There are two ways to win:

1. Subscribe To Our Blog By Email

To be considered for winning you must confirm your subscription after you sign up.
We do not share or sell your email address to anyone, you will only receive new beacon posts to your inbox and nothing else.

2. Leave A Comment On This Post

Simply leave a comment on this post, make sure to include your email (it will not be published). Your comment can be whatever you want it to be, tell us what you think of our blog, topics you would like to read about, or any questions about credit that you have!

You may enter using both methods, which will double your chances of winning. As long as you are subscribed you will be automatically entered into future contests.

A winner will be chosen at random at the end of the contest and will be notified by email. We will require your mailing address to send you your gift card. We will only consider winners in the United States and Canada. You will have 3 days to claim your prize, after which we will select another winner at random.

    I do have a question, we’re planning on buying a new house in the next year and last time I checked there was some negative remarks on my credit score from some debt from my previous marriage that my ex was supposed to take care of. It comes off in 7 years, right? What if I dispute some of it now, will that extend that 7 year deadline?

    Re: Michelle

    If it is primarily your ex’s debt you may want to just have him take your name off the account, if he does that it will drop off your credit report. If that’s impossible then you either want to dispute it or try to settle the amount. Collections will usually take a much smaller amount if you negotiate and contact them near the end of the month (They run their numbers by month, so they’re always looking for a boost in the last few days).

    I had a similar experience a few years back when my father was diagnosed with cancer. When he became unable to pay my mother settled a debt on an account that was in both their names for about 20% of the owed amount (They were divorced as well). Although the circumstances were definitely more extreme, it shows that collections are willing to take a loss just to get some money recouped.

    Disputing is a long process and may run well past you buying your home, if you can get a good settlement deal or get your name off the account it will help your credit much sooner.

    I wouldn’t do something like that. You could easily get a secured credit card which means you would actually be getting something for your money. One of the ways I built my credit early was by obtaining specific lines of credit, if you want to build your credit and not use a credit card you could buy something from a store that offers financing. When I was young I got a ring from a jewelry store for around $150, then I paid it off over 3 months. It still shows up on my credit report as a paid in full loan.     For those asking if it’s worthwhile to PAY someone to track your credit… I think the answer is NO.. Not at all. A copy of your credit report is FREE to get yourself! One of those reports you pay for isn’t much more than that. It is a good idea to get a free copy yourself every once in a while, just to make sure all the information is correct. You should already KNOW if you have unpaid debts, you don’t need to pay anyone to tell you.

    Great contest and great blog, thanks! Very useful information, everyone’s in debt these days and a dollar doesn’t stretch very far, people need to know how to take care of their finances! One thing I’d like to see is how to get your bf/gf involved or concerned with managing finances. I handle all the household bills etc, but when we talk about cutting back on going out to eat or saving up for luxuries, we just don’t get anywhere!
