  60. Laura Says:

Since I am self-employed, I have to pay for my own medical insurance, which is over $400 a month. It’s great for regular doctor appointments and to get my prescriptions at reasonable costs, but with a high (for me) deductible of $1500, I can’t afford to use my insurance for larger issues. For example, I have had an injured hip for more than two months, but I can’t afford to pay my deductible so I can’t get the MRI my doctor has ordered. Would it be better to drop my insurance and pay regular prices for the services I actually need (the $400/month premium is more than a fourth of my total earnings before taxes)?

In your professional opinion, why do all parents continue to worry so much about their kid’s college education expenses? I know the costs are increasing but there are loans and you don’t have to go the most expensive schools to get a good education. I have two young children and while I plan to help with with expenses, books, etc. while they are in college, I don’t feel like it is my responsibility to put them entirely through college. I put myself through college and still have debt from it and maybe that shapes my opinion. (I graduated in 2001). Does this make me a bad parent? I don’t understand why I should put it equal to other financial responsibilites, like retirement. Yet I’m generally afraid to ever voice this opinion since so many other parents feel the opposite. Any thoughts?
